Workstream 1: Best start in life

Giving every child the best start in Oxfordshire

Why is this important?

The health of children in Oxfordshire was negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis. Children in families in some areas of the county where household income is lower or who live in inadequate housing are even more likely to have worse health.

This means fewer children are ready to learn and develop when they start school, which in turn means they are less likely to have a flourishing childhood and achieve their potential.

What has been achieved so far?

An innovative Early Years Summit explored the critical role early childhood development plays in shaping a thriving, inclusive economy.

Taking learnings from the event, work is developing to identify gaps and draft recommendations around health equity in early years, considering leadership and partnerships. This work progresses with the Institute of Health Equity and within existing children’s partnership meeting structures.

A bespoke Equal Start Oxford programme provides maternity services designed specifically to address inequalities in access, experience and outcomes faced by Black and minoritised women.
