Charges for non-household waste (DIY)

Information about the charges for non-household waste (DIY) at our recycling centres.

You have a free allowance of:

  • up to two 50-litre rubble bags (or five 20-litre bags)
  • one bulky or fitted item no larger than 2000 mm x 750 mm x 700 mm

How to pay at a waste recycling centre

Our sites accept contactless payments (including Apple Pay and Samsung Pay).

If you cannot pay for items, you cannot deposit them. Ensure you have the electronic means to pay before travelling to our sites.

We do not charge for normal household waste such as recycling, green garden waste, residual waste, or asbestos.

What is DIY waste?

DIY (or non-household) waste is waste from your property and garden. It is primarily, but not exclusively, materials generated through:

  • construction
  • alteration and renovation
  • repair

Other sources could be items or materials most people would not take with them when moving home, for example:

  • floorboards
  • guttering
  • roofing materials
  • garden shed or greenhouse
  • raised beds
  • decking
  • fencing

We also class car and motorcycle tyres as non-household waste.

Commercial and trade waste

We do not accept commercial or trade waste from businesses or charities at any site except Redbridge

We will only accept DIY waste items brought to a waste site by the householder. For example, if you have a new bathroom fitted, you can take items from the old bathroom to a waste site. However, your bathroom fitter cannot take it because it is trade waste for them.

Learn more about commercial or trade waste.

Using a van or trailer

Some vehicles and trailer sizes require a permit to bring waste onto a site. Other vehicle types are not allowed to enter a waste and recycling centre at all. Check if you will need a free permit before you travel to a waste and recycling centre.

Other options for disposing of materials

You could hire a skip or find a waste carrier to come and remove waste for you. You can search online for local waste management and skip companies. Alternatively, you could hire someone via a classified ad.

Whatever you choose, you must comply with the householder's duty of care by:

  • ensuring that the person is a registered waste carrier
  • ensuring you know where they are taking the waste

Search the waste carriers' register.

The household duty of care

The Waste (Household Waste) Duty of Care (England and Wales) Regulations 2005 aims to:

  • crack down on fly-tipping
  • ensure we all handle rubbish properly and responsibly.

Fines for breaking the regulations

You can be fined up to £5,000 if you pass on waste to an unauthorised person. If we can trace fly-tipped waste back to a particular household, the householders may be fined up to £5,000. How to report fly-tipping.

Why we charge for DIY waste

We are only obliged to accept small quantities of non-household DIY waste at our waste and recycling centres. This type of waste is expensive to dispose of. Therefore, we charge a small amount for non-household (DIY) waste (over your free allowance) to help cover these costs.

We need to make savings

The county council's funding from central government has more than halved in recent years. Public sector budgets are expected to remain under severe pressure in the foreseeable future. We have made some difficult decisions to deliver a balanced budget as required by law and provide vital public services to Oxfordshire residents.
