Marlborough monument at Blenheim Palace - taken by Henry Taunt

The Oxfordshire Historic Environment Record (HER) - formerly the Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) - is an index (both paper and computer based) of all known archaeological and historical sites in the county.

We use the HER when we're asked for advice on planning applications and policies. Members of the public also use it to answer educational, research-based and general interest queries.

How to access the HER

Search online

You can now search online for monuments and buildings in the Historic Environment Record by using our Heritage Search, which searches across other heritage databases within Oxfordshire County Council.  HER information on Heritage Search was last updated in 2010.

Visit our office

The HER is open for public consultation by appointment (arrange by phone, fax or email with the Historic Environment Record Officer).

Please read our Policy and user guidelines (doc format, 119Kb), and note that you will need to sign and return the attached user declaration before using the HER.

Charges

Commercial users of the HER will be charged £75 per hour (and if this is combined with the supply of digitised data for the same landholding then a single charge of £100 will apply).

Other information that the HER contains

In addition to the information held on the map and paper-based record, the HER contains:

  • archaeological fieldwork reports and publications
  • detailed record files
  • information on scheduled ancient monuments and listed buildings
  • aerial photographic coverage of the whole county
  • local archaeological journals.
