Didcot and surrounding area infrastructure improvements

Reducing congestion and improving journey times, pedestrian and cycling connectivity and supporting new employment sites and housing.

Traffic Management notice

As part of our ongoing work, we need to implement traffic management measures to ensure the activity is carried out safely.

A4130, Didcot overnight work 24 August - 25 September 2026

Two-way temporary traffic lights will be placed on the eastbound carriageway between 7pm - 6am to allow us safe access to start installing a piling platform and ditch crossing to enable movement of our construction vehicles.

The lights will be auto with a traffic management marshal present in case of any issues.

Collett roundabout, Didcot

Reduced speed and narrow lanes
A reduced speed limit (50mph down to 30mph) is in operation on the approaches to Collett Roundabout, as well as narrow lanes. This is to allow us to undertake the bulk earthworks and construct the embankments of the new roundabout.

A415

Reduced speed limits
There is a 40mph speed limit between Europa School and Turnpike garage for safety along A415. This will be in place until 31 January 2028.

From 31 August 2026, an additional 20mph reduction will be implemented near the Turnpike garage. This is to facilitate safe access to the working area for the Thames Water upgrades to Culham Treatment Works. It will be in place until 31 August 2027.

As part of our ongoing work, we need to implement traffic management measures to ensure the activity is carried out safely.

Utility diversions

A number of utility providers are undertaking work to divert their service networks away from the area where we will be constructing the three sections of the scheme.

Thames Water (water) 27 July to 28 September 2026

Thames Water will be carrying out diversion works under a single lane closure with two-way temporary traffic lights on the A415 between Europa School and Culham Station.

To reduce the impact to the network, all the temporary lights associated with the utility diversions, are operational between the hours of 7am and 7pm, with a person operating the lights on manual control.

Public Rights of Way

These temporary closures are needed to facilitate drainage works, earthworks, and highway construction, and to ensure the safety of both the public and the workforce.

Clifton Hampden public right of way, March 2026 – September 2027

We have temporarily closed parts of footpaths 171/6/10 and 171/4/10 that lead to the west of the B4015 Oxford Road.

The closure will remain in place for approximately 18 months. A fully signed diversion route will be in place for the duration of the closure.

Appleford public rights of way,  March 2026 – September 2027

We have temporarily closed and diverted the Appleford public right of way to the north of the B4016.

The closure will last approximately 18 months. A fully signed diversion route will be in place for the duration of the closure.

About the improvements

The Didcot and surrounding areas major infrastructure scheme will provide vital transport infrastructure to reduce congestion and enable more reliable journey times, improve pedestrian and cycling connectivity, and support new employment sites and housing in and around Didcot.

The project includes four highway sections that incorporate improvements to existing roads, the construction of new roads, new walking and cycle routes, and will help to facilitate new and enhanced bus services.

Key benefits:

  • 19km of walking and cycling paths to improve pedestrian and cycle connectivity for work and leisure trips
  • 18 new bus stops to provide more sustainable travel options in and around Didcot
  • Reduce congestion and improve air quality in surrounding villages and parishes
  • Enable more jobs in the local area in new and existing employment sites
  • Support expected housing growth in the local area

Compulsory purchase orders (CPOs) and side road orders (SROs)

The Side road order (SRO) and compulsory purchase order (CPO) for the Didcot and surrounding area infrastructure improvements were confirmed by the Secretary of State for Transport in July 2025..
