Dealing with asbestos and other hazardous waste

How to deal with household cement-bonded asbestos and other hazardous waste in Oxfordshire.

Cement-bonded asbestos

Cement-bonded asbestos (such as that found in pipes or garage roofing) can be removed by hand, though care must be taken not to breathe in any fibres. 

To dispose of other types of asbestos, contact an asbestos contractor for professional removal.

Where you can take asbestos

Sheets of cement-bonded asbestos can be taken to:

You are not permitted to dispose of more than eight sheets in any one visit, and they must be no larger than 6 x 4 feet.

Warning

You must telephone at least 24 hours before you arrive at a site to dispose of cement-bonded asbestos. 

Contact us before you visit

Three sites can take asbestos, but you must telephone us at least 24 hours before you come so we can check if there is space for it. If there isn't space, we cannot accept the material, and we will ask you to visit on another day.

How to safely dispose of cement-bonded asbestos

Telephone the waste recycling centre telephone before visiting (see above). 

Removing and handling cement-bonded asbestos:

  • keep it damp when removing it
  • do not saw, cut, break or rub it in any way
  • wrap asbestos sheeting following HSE guidelines, for example, double wrap it in 1000 gauge polythene and tape it up securely
  • do not wrap more than two 6 x 4 feet sheets together - you must be able to lift the asbestos yourself at the waste and recycling centre

When you arrive at the waste and recycling centre, you must:

  • report to the weighbridge office and follow the directions of the site staff at the waste recycling centre
  • show proof of your address (such as a utility bill or driving licence)
  • remove the wrapped sheets from your vehicle and place them in the skip carefully; do not throw them in

Using a tradesperson to remove your asbestos

To find a company registered to deal with asbestos, please visit the Asbestos Removal Contractors Association website. We cannot arrange for the removal of asbestos or recommend any contractors.

If you hire a company or tradesperson to take down the material, it is the responsibility of that company or tradesman to dispose of it. It is illegal for them to leave the asbestos with you for disposal.

Before hiring anyone to deal with cement-bonded asbestos, ensure that they have the necessary licence and paperwork from the Environment Agency.

Other hazardous waste

Hazardous waste means rubbish with certain characteristics that harm health or the environment. These may be chemical, explosive, radioactive, or other characteristics.

Waste you can take to a waste recycling centre

Waste recycling centres can take certain types of household hazardous waste, including:

  • pesticides
  • insecticides
  • batteries
  • household cleaning chemicals
  • other garden chemicals
  • car care products
  • aerosols
  • photographic chemicals
  • solvent based liquid paint, such as gloss
  • paint thinner

Waste we do not accept at waste recycling centres

  • explosives such as fireworks and flares
