Finding settings for children aged 0-5
Children aged 0–5 in England can attend nurseries, pre-schools, playgroups, or childminders for education, development, and play.
Attendance is optional until age 5, when school becomes compulsory.
Find local settings and childminders as well as information for families by searching the Family Information Service Directory (FIS).
Funding
All 3 and 4-year-olds get 15 hours of free early education per week.
- Working parents: Funded childcare is available for children aged 9 months to 4 years.
- Non-working parents: Some 2-year-olds may qualify for free childcare based on benefits or additional needs.
- Asylum seekers or those with no recourse to public funds (NRPF): Some 2-year-olds can access 15 hours of free education if they meet specific criteria.
Speaking, reading and writing in English
Children who speak a language other than English at home are supported in learning English in schools, but they should also receive support at home.

Special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)
Providers must make reasonable adjustments for children with learning or physical difficulties who may need extra support.
