Independent travel training

Support for young people with disabilities or anxiety to use public transport safely.

Many young people struggle with public transport to get to school or college by public transport. They may not feel confident, struggle to navigate, or are unfamiliar with their local area. These issues can make meeting up with friends and family or even joining after-school clubs or groups difficult.

If your young person has an education, health and care plan (EHCP) and is in full-time education, they may be eligible.

Travel anxiety

Catching the bus by yourself can sometimes feel a bit daunting. It may be that you worry about getting your wheelchair on when people are standing in the wheelchair space, concerns you'll struggle to balance on a packed bus, or the anxiety of trying to work out which stop to get off at on an unfamiliar route.

All these things worry us a bit when making a journey, but there are times when those uncertainties can make it feel harder to face a trip and you might feel like you can’t make regular journeys.

Build confidence and develop travel-savvy skills

Independent travel trainers are dedicated to helping young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) plan and practice travelling on public transport that you might find yourself avoiding due to worrying how you will manage the journey. A travel trainer helps plan and complete local trips, build confidence and develop travel-savvy skills.
