Admissions to infant and primary schools

Applying to start infant and primary school for the first time.

Children born between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2014 (inclusive) will be starting Reception from September 2018

How to apply

From 25 October 2017 applications can be submitted for primary and infant schools.

If you cannot apply online, you can request a paper application form from schools and from the School Admissions Team.

The deadline for receipt of primary and infant school applications is 15 January 2018.

If your application is late, it will be processed later in the year, and you are far less likely to get a place at one of your preferred schools.

Everybody needs to apply. Even if your child attends nursery classes within a primary school, you must still apply for a place in the main school

Key dates

  • 25 October 2017 - parents can start to apply 
  • 15 January 2018 - closing date for on-time applications
  • 16 April 2018 – allocation day: letters sent (by second class post) and emails sent detailing the offer of a school place
  • 3 May 2018 - deadline for submitting response form, continued interest forms, late applications and changes of preference
  • 12 June 2018 – second allocation round: letters sent after first run of continued interest list and late applications
  • September 2018 – start of the school year

Allocation day

Everyone who applies online by 15 January 2018 will receive an email on 16 April 2018 advising which school their child has been offered a place at. All applicants will also be sent a letter on 16 April 2018 with all relevant information.

The deadline for responding to school offers and transport offers, or to add your child's name to a continued interest list, or to submit a new application is 3 May 2018.

Important things to remember when applying

  • you can list three different schools in order of preference. We strongly advise you to use all three preferences
  • it is the responsibility of parents/carers to apply for a school place
  • we advise you to enter your catchment (or designated area) school as one of your preferences
  • if your application is late, it will be processed later in the year, and you are far less likely to get a place at one of your preferred schools

School transport

Primary and infant school children below the age of eight are eligible for free home to school transport where they attend their nearest available school, if that school is over two miles from their home address. However, transport can also be provided where the distance to the nearest available school is less than two miles and the route is currently listed as dangerous by the council. Please note that where a new school is built, this can affect a child’s eligibility to school transport.

Catchment areas

Many, but not all schools, have catchment (or designated) areas.

If there are more applications than places, priority is given to children in accordance with the school's published admission rules. We advise you to list your catchment school, if there is one for your address, as one of your preferences.

Please note that attending your catchment school does not guarantee that your child is eligible for free home to school transport.  Primary and infant school children under the age of eight are eligible for free home to school transport where they attend their nearest available school, if that school is over two miles from their home address. However, transport can also be provided where the route to the nearest available school is less than 2 miles and the route is currently listed as dangerous by the council. This search gives rough straight line distances from a post code to school. The Admissions Team measures more precisely, from the child’s home address to school, in determining home to school distances.

Will my child get a place?

Catchment area is one of the ways that places at schools are decided. There are other factors, such as whether a child has a brother or sister at the school or whether they have special educational needs. Religious or faith schools could use the religion of your child or family as a deciding factor.

What if I don’t get the place I want?

You can do one or more of the following:

  • Add your child's name to the Continued Interest (or waiting) list. More information (pdf format, 235Kb) Please beware that if you add your child’s name to a school’s continued interest list, and a place becomes available that can be allocated your child, the place will be given to your child and their place at the school originally offered will be taken away.
  • Change preferences - add new preference(s) or change preference order. More information (pdf format, 130Kb)  
  • Appeal for a place (see below)

Appeal

You have the right to appeal for a place at any school where a place could not be offered. The information sent out to you in the post will explain more about who is responsible for organising your appeal.

Junior school applications

Junior schools are those that take children aged 7-11. Please see the junior school page for further details.

Deferring an application

Parents of children born between 1 April 2014 and 31 August 2014 may request that their application be deferred for entry to Reception in September 2019.

If this request is agreed to, it does not guarantee a place for your child at your preferred school and adds no weight to the application. The application will be considered alongside all others and any available places will be allocated in accordance with the school’s published admissions rules.

To request a deferred application complete a deferral request form. You should submit the request before 15 January 2018.
