Reminiscence groups

Talking objects - how museum artefacts can help stimulate conversation, fun and memories.

The Oxfordshire Museums Service Learning and Access team has been running object-based sessions with groups of older people since 2004.

In this time we have built up a wealth of experience, as well as a huge collection of fascinating stories from the people we visit.

How it works

A trained facilitator brings boxes of themed items to your group and helps get the conversation flowing. Museum artefacts, documents, photographs and a range of well-loved objects help to stimulate conversation and allow shared memories, often prompting much laughter.

There are more than 40 themed boxes of objects and photographs on topics such as 'Fun and Games', ‘Sporting Life’, 'Food' and 'Sunday Best'.

We are able to visit independent community groups, supported community groups, assisted living groups and day centres throughout Oxfordshire. Unfortunately, we are not able to visit care homes.

Cost: £21

Please note all prices are subject to an annual review by the County Council.

Suggested group size: maximum of 25

Session length: 45-60 minutes

Those Were the Days group

Do you have memories of Woodstock and the surrounding villages? Those Were the Days is a monthly social group at The Oxfordshire Museum for people to meet up and share memories about the local area. We meet on the first Friday of the month. New members are always welcome. 

Date Activity
Friday 2 February All dressed up  -  looking at the fashions of yesteryear when hats were essential and everyone dressed up when they went out.
Friday 2 March Famous Oxfordshire - Oxfordshire has produced a lot of famous folk, looking at the famous county inhabitants from past and present. Have you had any famous encounters?
Friday 6 April Entertainment - Listening to a crackly gramophone or making your own music, getting dressed up for the theatre or cinema – how we entertained ourselves before the television dominated.
Friday 4 May MRC Tour – visit the Museum Resource Centre in Standlake for a behind the scenes visit  * subject to transport availability
Friday 1 June Gardens / Gardening – were you fanatical grower or a reluctant mower or something in between.  Bring your memories or gardens past and present.

  • Time: 2pm – 3.30/4pm
