Learning an instrument

How to apply online and pay for music tuition.

Boy playing guitar

Most tuition is offered by our visiting teachers in schools around the county during the school day. However, there are also out of school opportunities for all ages.

We offer tuition in:

  • strings: violin, viola, cello, double bass
  • woodwind: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone
  • brass: trumpet, cornet, trombone, baritone, euphonium, horn (French and tenor), tuba
  • percussion: drum kit, tuned percussion,
  • guitar: classical, electric and bass
  • keyboard
  • vocal/singing.

Lessons

We offer 34 lessons in an academic year. Charges will be per lesson, charged termly in advance. The Music Service works on the old three term school year. Refunds will be made, if necessary at the end of the academic year.

Students will usually have lessons during the school day. For most instruments, we need at least five students in the group for lessons to start. However, we will start small groups of 3-4 pupils for 20 minute lessons while the teacher recruits more pupils into the longer lesson.

Students are given a record book so they know what to practise each week and to help communication with parents / carers. Students will be given the opportunity to work through our assessment system (up to and including grade 7 approximately); take graded 3 – 5 internal examinations and upper exams (grades 6 – 8) with Trinity College.
