Apply to a University Technical College (UTC) or Studio School

How to apply for a Year 10 transfer at a more science focused and vocational curriculum school.

University Technical Colleges (UTCs) and Studio Schools are state funded educational establishments that offer places to children from Year 10 to Year 13.

These establishments offer a more science focused and vocational curriculum than most state funded schools.

The deadline for on-time applications was 31 October 2016. People who applied online by this date will receive an email on 1 March with the outcome of their application. All people who applied on time will receive a letter with all relevant information, which will be posted 1 March.

Please note, if you applied online, you can respond to the outcome of your application online, and there is no need to return paper forms. People who applied on paper will need to return the relevant paper forms.

How to apply

The deadline for applications was 31 October 2016. If you have missed this deadline, you may complete a paper application form (pdf format, 95Kb), and if you have extenuating reasons for a late application please put this in writing.

Late applications must be received by the Admissions Team by 21 March 2017. Applicants who apply by this date will be written to on 8 May 2017.

Key dates

  • 8 September 2016 - parents can start to apply
  • 31 October 2016 - closing date for on-time applications
  • 1 March 2017 - offer letters sent by second class post and emails sent to those who applied online
  • 21 March 2017 - Deadline for receipt of response forms, continued interest list forms, late applications and changes of preference.
  • 8 May 2017 - Offer letters sent after first run of continued interest list
  • September 2017 - start of school year

School transport

If your child gets a place at a UTC or Studio School, this does not mean that they will be eligible for free home to school transport.

Free home to school transport will normally only be provided for children attending their nearest available school, if this school is over three miles from their home address.
