Different types of scams
How to protect yourself against scams.
Mail scams
Postal scams include fake lotteries and private draws, offers of investment, clairvoyant letters and health cures.
Telephone scams
Common ones include investment, pension, or computer support scams. The individual calling can be very charming on the phone and will pretend to be calling from a trusted organisation such as a government body, the police, the bank, T.V. licensing for example.
Internet scams
Emails can appear to be genuine but may well take the user to a fake website or ask for personal details or have a link that if opened can then allow them access to everything on your computer!
Doorstop crime
Residents are to be wary of cold callers trying to sell goods or services including garden clearances, tree cutting and work to roofs and gutters.
How to protect yourself and others
- Always say ‘NO’ to unwanted or uninvited callers.
- If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is!
- Never feel pressured into deciding on the spot; take time to consider an offer.
- Be wise to any contact where you are asked for money in return for a prize or delivery.
- Keep your personal details safe, always be cautious when disclosing personal details that you are talking to a genuine person, and they are from a legitimate company.
- Take care when opening links or attachments; criminals can replicate genuine companies.
- Talk to someone you trust if you are suspicious.
