The temporary congestion charge operates all year round, including bank holidays. However, outside of the charging times, there is no charge for any vehicle type, with or without a permit.
Charging location signage
Congestion charging locations are marked by road signs.
The blue sign indicates that you are 280 yards (256 m) from the charging location. At this point, you can change your route to avoid it.
The white signs on both sides of the road mark the charging location. If you pass these signs in a car without a permit, you must pay the charge.
Below are images of both signs.
Map of permit areas
We have created three permit areas for Oxfordshire residents. These permit areas determine the type of free resident permit you can apply for. They are not congestion charge areas.
If you live in one of these permit areas, you can apply for a free permit (day passes).
You do not need to know which permit area you live in. When you create an account or log in, the system will show you the permit for your address.
The map below shows the three permit areas and the permit type you can apply for.
- central permit area (red area at the centre of the map) - unlimited free day passes plus 50 free visitor passes
- Oxford permit area (blue area) - 100 free day passes
- Oxfordshire permit area (yellow area) - 25 free day passes
