Victorian Oxfordshire
Dress up as a Victorian and immerse yourself in the past.
What you can expect
All the best county museums have a section dedicated to the Victorians.
The changes that society saw during this important period were significant. Between 1837 and 1901, technology, public health, civic administration, employment, medicine, education, globalism, government and industry moved along at a pace not seen before.
One of the biggest shifts was the transfer of Britain’s population to the urban centres, flipping the rural to urban ratio.
You’ll see many items on display to add colour to this, with the chance to get hands on.
Explore a range of topics including religion, toys and games, school, needlework and the Great Exhibition.
The first thing you’ll see is one of our ‘residents’ taking his steam bath. And then of course the ornate toilet – a throne in every sense! You can even pull the chain to hear it work.
Say hello to Queen Victoria and pick up a torch and shine some light into the doll’s house. This gallery is packed with history that has influenced how we live today.
