Opening your world with independent travel help
How independent travel trainers help young people with additional needs.
Travel anxiety
Catching the bus by yourself can sometimes feel a bit daunting. It may be that you worry about getting your wheelchair on when people are standing in the wheelchair space, concerns you'll struggle to balance on a packed bus, or the anxiety of trying to work out which stop to get off at on an unfamiliar route.
All these things worry us a bit when making a journey, but there are times when those uncertainties can make it feel harder to face a trip and you might feel like you can’t make regular journeys.
Build confidence and develop travel-savvy skills
Independent travel trainers are dedicated to helping young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) plan and practice travelling on public transport that you might find yourself avoiding due to worrying how you will manage the journey. A travel trainer helps plan and complete local trips, build confidence and develop travel-savvy skills.

Meet Kiera
Kiera, a sixth-former in the county found the independent travel training opened up her world and helped her travel to her studies more easily.

Before the training, my confidence in travelling on public transport was so low that I couldn’t do it. My independent travel trainer has been amazing. Nothing has been a problem and nothing is ever an issue…My confidence has changed a lot. Now I’m independent, which feels good.
