Oxfordshire’s Folkloric myths and traditions

Discover the stories that have shaped Oxfordshire for generations. This exhibition explores the county’s rich folklore through tales of superstition, tradition and mythology, all rooted in local landscapes and communities.

Using objects from the collection alongside atmospheric displays, the exhibition brings these stories to life. Visitors can explore a woodland setting, encounter a dragon, and uncover the beliefs and customs that shaped the lives of local communities.

Stories from parishes across Oxfordshire are woven throughout the exhibition, from everyday superstitions to legendary creatures and long‑held traditions. Many are closely tied to specific places, giving visitors the chance to discover a tale connected to their own town or village.

Whether you’re interested in local history, curious about old beliefs, or simply enjoy a good story, this exhibition offers a chance to see Oxfordshire in a new way — and perhaps leave inspired to seek out more folklore hidden in familiar places.
