Children with additional and complex needs

Specialist treatment foster care for children with emotional, behavioural or additional needs.

Teenager

What is Oxfordshire treatment foster care (OTFC)?

This type of foster care is aimed at children who have the most complex emotional, behavioural and educational needs.

These children are more likely to remain in care throughout their childhood with a high risk of placement breakdown. They may well be experiencing difficulties at school and in the wider community.

These children need highly structured and nurturing families in which to grow, learn and improve their life chances.

Fostering opportunities

We are currently recruiting OTFC foster carers to work with these vulnerable children. We provide training, lots of support and fees of over £600 per week.

How long?

The treatment usually lasts for around 9 to 12 months. Highly-trained foster carers are supported by a clinical team to ensure that at the end of this period, the child is ready to move on to long-term foster carers or back to their birth parents.

Age groups

The programme is available for children between 3 and 11 years old.

Issues to consider

"It's great to know you're not in it alone."

"Charlie was only with us for 12 months and it was truly amazing to see what was achieved in such a short time."

Being an OTFC foster carer is a demanding but immensely rewarding job. You should consider these points:

  • OTFC uses a team approach to treatment, with the foster carers trained in behavioural techniques and working closely with a multi-agency team.
  • Foster carers implement an individualised behaviour programme for each child under the guidance of the programme supervisor.
  • Foster carers receive an enhanced level of support from programme staff.  Out of hours support is available 7 days a week.
  • There is a daily phone call (weekdays) to monitor and track the child’s behaviour.
  • Foster carers are required to meet weekly as a group to discuss the child’s progress with the interventions. This is a great way to get support and learn from each other.
  • For this programme, the child will be the only foster child in the family with the exception of sibling groups placed together.
  • We require one foster carer to commit to the programme full time.
  • The treatment part of the programme usually lasts about 9-12 months. However, carers are expected to commit to care for the child until they are ready to move on to their permanent family.
  • There needs to be a reasonable age gap between the foster carers’ own children and the OTFC child (minimum 3 years).

Fees and allowances

A weekly fee of £357 plus allowances is paid.

How to apply

If you are interested in applying for the OTFC programme please contact our enquiry officer on 0800 783 5724 to start the process.

Fostering plus

Fostering plus is a scheme for children who have more challenging behaviour, possibly because they have had particularly difficult experiences. We therefore pay an additional allowance which is based on the additional training, experience and skills required to be a foster plus carer. As a foster plus carer you will need to have gained the necessary experience to support these more challenging children.
