Information about volunteering for a Code Club volunteer role with Oxfordshire Libraries

We are looking to create new opportunities for volunteers to increase the range of digital activities that we run in our libraries via Code Clubs.

Description

Code Club is a nationwide network of volunteer-led coding clubs for children aged 9-13.

A Code Club volunteer delivers fun and interactive sessions on a weekly basis, helping groups of children aged 9-13 to learn to code either on their own, or with another volunteer. Step-by-step instructions for the projects are available from Code Club and staff will be present in the library during the sessions. You will need to register as a STEM ambassador, undergo a DBS check, and provide two references to run a Code Club for Oxfordshire Libraries.

This role is only available to volunteers aged 18 and over.

Volunteer's role

Purpose

  • to deliver Code Club sessions for children aged 9+
  • to provide an enjoyable experience for children to develop programming skills

Activities

  • helping deliver fun and interactive sessions involving programming languages from a basic level (Scratch, HTML/CSS, and Python)
  • promoting coding and inspiring children
  • acting as a role model and helping children to troubleshoot when they encounter problems

Skills and abilities needed

  • to enjoy working with children (9+)
  • to be happy guiding children with set instructions
  • to have good interpersonal skills
  • to be enthusiastic about programming and its benefits - you do not need to be an expert programmer!
