A host helps library staff plan and deliver fun and interactive sessions involving rhymes and simple stories for children under 5 and their parents/carers.

Description 

Purpose

  • to help library staff deliver rhyme time sessions for children under 5 and their parents/carers
  • to provide an enjoyable experience for families to share, and an informal opportunity for children to develop early literacy and social skills

Activities

  • helping plan and deliver fun and interactive sessions involving rhymes and simple stories
  • promoting rhyme times and encouraging parents/carers to attend with their children
  • meeting and greeting families, engaging and chatting with them
  • preparing and organising the library space, including arranging furniture, toys and books and clearing the area after the session
  • acting as a role model encouraging the singing of rhymes and the sharing of stories with young children

Skills and abilities needed

  • to enjoy working with young children (under 5s), their parents and carers
  • to be happy to sing in public
  • to be outgoing and have good interpersonal skills
  • to be enthusiastic about rhyme times and their benefits
  • to be willing to use props such as puppets and musical instruments
