No cold caller zones

How to take action on unwanted cold callers.

The first 'No cold Caller Zones' were introduced by Trading Standards in 2006. There are 29 zones across Oxfordshire to date.

It is now a criminal offence for cold callers to return to someone’s house, if they have been asked to leave.

Cold calling by charities is controlled  by the www.fundraisingregulator.org.uk

Scheme aims

The aim of setting up zones is to reduce the amount of unwanted cold callers. Street signs are placed at entrance points to the zones and residents are given door stickers to advise potential cold callers that they are not welcome and should not enter.

It is hoped that these zones will make it more difficult for distraction burglars and rogue traders to operate in the area.

Zones should meet these three criteria before they can be set up:

  • a history of reported doorstep crime or distraction burglary
  • a vulnerable population
  • a defined geographical area.

A majority of residents have to support the zone before implementation and must be proactive in promoting the no-cold-calling message.

Businesses are advised not to cold call in designated NCCZ, the residents do not want you to do so and if you repeatedly call and/or refuse to leave you may commit a criminal offence. Businesses should look out for No Cold Calling Zone signs on lampposts that identify Zones' location. Individual households may also display signs outside of Zones and again you should not cold call.
