Universal health services for children and young people

Health advice or treatment that can be accessed without a referral.

Many families with disabled children will not require any extra help because they will be sufficiently supported using universal services. Universal services are those which are used by and benefit all children and families without the need for a referral.

Self-care

The Oxfordshire Healthier Together website is a programme that aims to improve local healthcare for children and young people by providing accurate health and wellbeing advice and guidance. The NHS also has guides and resources to support keeping fit and healthy.

General Practitioners (GP)

GPs treat medical conditions and can refer patients to hospitals and other medical services for routine, urgent, and specialist care. Find a GP on the NHS website.

NHS 111

NHS 111 is a free-to-call single, non-emergency medical helpline. Get help for your symptoms - NHS 111 or call 111.

Children and Young People's 0-19 Public Health Service

The Children and Young People's 0-19 Public Health Service supports children, young people and families from pregnancy to age 19. The service includes Health Visiting, School Health Nursing and the Family Nurse Partnership.

The service is universal and available to all children, young people and families living in Oxfordshire, providing advice, support and early help to promote health, wellbeing and development.

It provides health and development reviews, advice and support to help children and young people stay healthy, safe and well. If concerns about a child's health, wellbeing or development are identified, we will discuss these with families and, where appropriate, work with other services and make referrals to ensure the right support is in place. It works closely with families, schools, GPs and other services to help children and young people access the support they need.

They can offer advice and support on a range of areas, including:

  • sleep
  • behaviour
  • emotional wellbeing
  • continence and toilet training
  • healthy lifestyles
  • development and school readiness
