Safer Roads A420 Project
Making the A420 safer for people walking, cycling and travelling through Oxford
About the scheme
The Safer Roads A420 Project is a programme of road safety improvements along the A420 corridor between the A34 Botley Interchange and the A40 Headington Roundabout. The scheme aims to reduce the risk of collisions, improve safety for vulnerable road users and support Oxfordshire County Council's Vision Zero ambition of eliminating fatal and serious road traffic collisions by 2050. The project supports the objectives of the Local Transport and Connectivity Plan (LTCP) by helping to create a safer and more accessible transport network for all users.
Key elements of the scheme include
- New and improved zebra crossings.
- Side road crossing improvements.
- Cycle lane and road marking enhancements.
- Solar road studs and cycle lane delineation measures.
- Junction improvements for people walking, wheeling and cycling.
- Updates to bus gate timings.
- Accessibility improvements, including tactile paving upgrades.
These improvements aim to:
- Reduce the number and severity of collisions along the A420 corridor.
- Improve safety for people walking, wheeling and cycling.
- Improve comfort and accessibility for vulnerable road users.
- Improve the safety and operation of key junctions and crossing points.
- Support reliable bus services and the efficient operation of the wider transport network.
- Support Oxfordshire County Council’s health, wellbeing, air quality and climate objectives through safer and more attractive active travel routes.
How is it being funded?
The A420 Safer Roads Project is being funded through the Department for Transport's Safer Roads Fund. Oxfordshire County Council successfully secured funding to deliver safety improvements along the A420 corridor between the A34 Botley Interchange and the Green Road Roundabout, Headington. The funding is dedicated to measures that reduce the risk of collisions and improve safety, particularly for vulnerable road users. The scheme is fully funded through the Department for Transport's Safer Roads Fund.
