Talk hosted by the Friends of Summertown Library
"The dramatic capture of Pegasus Bridge & how local soldiers led the way"
Speaker: David Innes
The greatest invasion in history started when 180 men of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry landed in gliders by night to seize 2 key objectives on the East flank of the Normandy invasion - “the most outstanding flying achievement of the War”. The total surprise involved helped pave the way for the success of the D-Day air and seaborne invasion. This is the story of the men and the machines in this initial assault, with film of how the lives of the key players were changed forever.
DAVID INNES is a retired Brigadier with 28 years service in the Royal Green Jackets, serving in Hong Kong, Cyprus, Belize, Rhodesia/Zimbabwe and Germany, as well as the UK. He helped set up the infantry Territorial Army battalion in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, and is a former Trustee of the Woodstock Soldiers' Museum.
