Hackney carriage or private hire vehicle

What you need to know

The free hackney carriage or private hire vehicle permit allows unlimited travel through all six congestion charging locations during charging hours. 

  • you are limited to 1 permit
  • there is no limit to the number of cars on your permit   

How long your permit lasts

Your permit will be valid for 12 months or until your licence expires (whichever is sooner).  

You cannot use it until we confirm that we have approved your application. Your permit will not be available to use until the scheme begins.

Who can get a hackney carriage or private hire vehicle permit

To qualify:

  • you must hold a valid Hackney Carriage or Private Hire Vehicle Licence
  • you or the operator you work for must be the registered keeper of the car(s) on your application

You do not qualify if your licence has expired or if you are in the process of applying for or renewing it.

What you need to get a hackney carriage or private hire vehicle permit

You must provide the following evidence to support your application:  

  • a valid Hackney Carriage or Private Hire Vehicle licence showing the vehicle registration (number plate) of the car(s) on your application
  • the V5C (logbook) of each car on the application, showing that you or the operator you work for is the registered keeper
