Approved driving instructor

What you need to know

The free approved driving instructor permit allows unlimited travel through all six congestion charging locations during charging hours. 

The permit only covers the car when being used to pick up and drop off students for driving lessons or a driving test.

  • you are limited to 1 permit
  • you can have up to 3 cars on your permit
  • the permit must not be used for private travel

How long your permit lasts

Your permit will be valid for 12 months. 

You cannot use your permit until we confirm that we have approved your application. Your permit will not be available to use until the scheme begins.

Who can get an approved driving instructor permit

To qualify:

  • you must be an approved driving instructor (ADI) registered with the DVSA
  • you or the driving school you work for must be the registered keeper of the car(s) on your application

What you need to get an approved driving instructor permit

You must provide the following evidence to support your application:  

  • a copy of your DVSA approved driving instructor registration
  • the V5C (logbook) of each car on your application, showing that you or the driving school you work for is the registered keeper
