Special educational needs support for migrant children

Support for migrant families.

What support might be offered?

Children who need additional support in school are described as having ‘special educational needs’ or ‘SEN’.

Sometimes you will see this written as SEND with the ‘D’ standing for disability.

Each school has an ‘SEN policy’ which outlines the support they offer. The Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENDCO) is responsible for any additional support a child might require.

Education and health care plans (EHCP)

If your child has very complex needs, professionals might consider an education and health care plan. This is a document which identifies the needs of your child and how they will be met by the school.

Once an EHCP is agreed and in place, the school will be expected to provide the support listed in the plan.

The EHCP may recommend that your child might be better supported in a specialist school.
