Traffic filter exemptions and permits

Some vehicles are exempt from the restrictions and some people may qualify for a permit.

Traffic filter restrictions only apply to cars and motorhomes

You can use the DVLA's vehicle checker to check your vehicle's type.
If the 'vehicle type approval' is M1, the DVLA classifies your vehicle as a passenger car. The DVLA often classifies motorhomes as M1, so they too are subject to the restrictions. You may be eligible for a permit (see Permit types below).

Electric vehicles

Electric vehicles are not exempt from the traffic filter restrictions.

Vehicles that are exempt from the traffic filter restrictions

Your vehicle is exempt from the traffic filter restrictions if it is not a car (M1). For example, vans, motorbikes, mopeds, scooters and lorries are exempt. The automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera checks the vehicle type when you pass. You do not need to apply for a permit if your vehicle is listed below.

Exempt cars:

  • emergency services
  • military
  • highway and utility works (in certain circumstances)

Free permits

Permits allow some cars (M1) or users to travel freely through the traffic filter locations during their hours of operation. All permits are free.

The traffic filter permits are 'virtual'. You will not receive a physical permit to display in your car. The cameras at the charging locations will read your number plate and check for a linked permit.

As a resident, you may qualify for a permit (free day passes):

  • Oxford permit area (100 free day passes)
  • Oxfordshire permit area (25 free day passes)

We offer permits to groups and individuals, including:

  • Blue Badge holders
  • disabled tax class vehicle
  • community health or care workers
  • unpaid carers
  • frequent hospital patient
