Recognising quiet lanes

Quiet lanes will be clearly marked so you know where you can and cannot drive.

Quiet lanes will be designed so that general motor traffic cannot enter or pass through, except where access is explicitly permitted.

Signs and bollards

This will be made clear through a combination of physical measures, legal restrictions and signage, implemented in accordance with national traffic signing and highway guidance.

This will typically include:

  • physical modal filters (such as bollards or gates) preventing through‑movement by motor vehicles,
  • clear entry signage indicating that the route is a quiet lane with restricted motor access, and
  • Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO) setting out permitted access (for example for residents, landowners and emergency services).

Where appropriate, additional repeater signing may be used to reinforce the lane's status and function.
