How people will know they are on a quiet lane
How people will recognise a quiet lane
Quiet lanes will be designed so that general motor traffic cannot enter or pass through, except where access is explicitly permitted.
This will be made clear through a combination of physical measures, legal restrictions and signing, implemented in accordance with national traffic signing and highway guidance.
This will typically include:
- physical modal filters (such as bollards or gates) preventing through‑movement by motor vehicles,
- clear entry signage indicating that the route is a quiet lane with restricted motor access, and
- legal Traffic Regulation Orders setting out permitted access (for example for residents, landowners and emergency services).
Where appropriate, additional repeater signing may be used to reinforce the status and function of the lane.
