Statement of Reasons - Roger Bannister Mile
OXFORDSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL (OXFORD, ROGER BANNISTER MILE) (SPECIAL EVENT) ORDER 2026
Statement of Reasons
The Roger Bannister Mile is to be held for charity on 4 May 2026 in memory of the famed athlete. The first such event was held in 2024 to commemorate 70 years since the four minute track mile was broken. The County Council is satisfied that for public safety reasons and because of the number of participants, the nature of the event and number of spectators, it is not reasonably practicable for it to be conducted fully off-road.
To facilitate the holding of the event the closure for public safety, parts of roads are required to separate the public from moving vehicles.
Runners, supporters and spectators take up so much road space that a danger may be posed to themselves and other road users without traffic measures being in force. As roads become free of runners, where appropriate, the traffic restrictions will be lifted.
Full details are outlined in the accompanying documentation. Dated: 26 March 2026
