The Principles

The eight Marmot principles set out the changes to create healthier and more equal communities.

The eight Marmot Principles

The Marmot Principles describe what needs to change across society to support better health, providing a headline guide for action. These principles are grounded in decades of research.

The eight Marmot Principles are:

  1. Giving every child the best start in life
  2. Helping people develop skills, confidence and control over their lives
  3. Creating fair employment and good work
  4. Ensuring a healthy standard of living for all
  5. Building healthy, safe and sustainable places
  6. Preventing ill health before it develops
  7. Tackling racism and discrimination and their health impacts
  8. Improving health while protecting the environment

Together, these principles focus on the root causes of health inequalities, not just their symptoms.
