Who to notify when you get married or form a civil partnership

Find out who you may need to contact when you get married or form a civil partnership.

Before or after your ceremony, you may need to let certain organisations know that you are married or in a civil partnership.

This may apply whether or not you choose to change your name.

Changes to your passport

Some countries may not accept a passport if the name in it has not been changed, even if you take your marriage or civil partnership certificate with you. If you are unsure, check with your travel agent or the country’s consulate before you travel.

If you are travelling abroad, make sure you book your tickets in the same name as the passport you will use for your journey.

When you can change your passport

You can apply to change your passport details up to three months before your marriage or civil partnership ceremony. However, you will not be able to use the new passport until the day of your ceremony. You can complete the forms once you have given your notice of marriage or civil partnership.

How to change your passport

If you need your passport to be changed before you travel, you will need to apply to the Passport Office for a new standard UK passport.

Application forms are available from post offices. You will also need to complete a PD2 form, which is available online. Once you have given your notice of marriage or civil partnership, you can complete the forms. The Registrar or Minister of Religion conducting your ceremony will need to complete the PD2 form for you.

You should then send the PD2 form to the Passport Office with your passport application or request to amend your passport.

Warning

If you are travelling abroad for your honeymoon, remember to book your travel tickets in the same name as the passport you will use for your journey.

Other organisations

Below are some of the organisations one or both of you may need to contact. Some may ask to see your marriage or civil partnership certificate as proof.
