Taking care of you
With a toddler, your wellbeing matters too.
Caring for a child can be joyful, busy and sometimes overwhelming.
As your child grows and becomes more independent, your role changes too - and that can bring new challenges.
Support is available for you. Parenting is not something you have to do alone.
Looking after your physical wellbeing
Looking after yourself is an important part of looking after your child.
Make sure you:
- rest when you can, even short breaks
- eat and drink regularly
- take time to recover if you're feeling unwell
- speak to your GP if something doesn't feel right
Small habits can help you feel more able to manage day-to-day demands.
Emotional wellbeing
It is common to feel tired, stretched or overwhelmed when caring for a toddler. Changes in routines, behaviour and sleep can all have an impact.
If difficult feelings last or feel stronger, support is available:
- talk to your health visitor or GP
- speak to someone you trust
- reach out for professional support if you need it
- you are not expected to cope on your own
The little things can make a difference, such as taking time for yourself, getting some fresh air, or connecting with other parents.
Small things that can help
You don't need to make big changes. Simple steps can make everyday life feel more manageable:
accept offers of help from family and friends
- take breaks when you can
- keep expectations realistic
- be kind to yourself – you are doing your best
Some days will feel easier than others, and that's okay.
Building a support network
Spending time with other parents and getting out and about can help build confidence and reduce feelings of isolation.
You could:
- join local groups or activities
- visit a children and family centre or family hub
- connect with others in similar situations
Sharing experiences can make a big difference.
