Oxfordshire Council of Sanctuary

How we supports refugees, asylum seekers and migrant residents

Oxfordshire Council of Sanctuary

On 17 March 2025, Oxfordshire became the first county council to be awarded Council of Sanctuary status. This recognition reflects our commitment to welcoming and including refugees, people seeking asylum, and other vulnerable migrants across Oxfordshire.

As part of the UK-wide City of Sanctuary Local Authority Network, we collaborate with local partners and people with lived experience to understand the current support available to those seeking sanctuary and identify opportunities for improvement. The aim is to embed a culture of welcome and inclusion across all of Oxfordshire's communities.

Action plan 2025 - 2028

Our action plan was shaped by people who have sought sanctuary and by partners across local communities, voluntary groups, statutory services, and universities. It supports our wider work on equality, diversity and inclusion.
