Where can I get help and advice?

Getting health support for your child should always start with a referral from your doctor.

If you have any concerns and cannot speak to a doctor in the first instance, see how universal services could help.

There is a range of health services available to support children and young people.

Therapy services

Children’s occupational therapy

Supports children and young people with functional skills and independence in all aspects of daily living, such as self-feeding, dressing and participating in play and school activities.

Children’s physiotherapy

Supports children and young people who have delayed physical development or a physical disability or condition that affects their ability to move and take part in activities at home or at school.

Children’s speech and language therapy

Supports children and young people with their speech and language development and with eating, drinking and swallowing problems.

Community based services

Children’s community nursing

Supports children and young people in education or community settings whose condition needs nursing advice and specialist support. They also offer respite care at home for those with complex healthcare needs.

Health visiting

Supports parents with new babies, offering support and advice at key points from the antenatal period until a child starts school. This could involve developmental concerns, such as sleep, diet, toilet training, movement, and talking.

Family nurse

Work alongside younger parents, offering support and up-to-date information on health and development from the early stages of pregnancy through to a child's second birthday.

Children’s community paediatrics

Support with a range of child focused community medical services.

Physical development

Children’s bladder and bowel service

Supports children and young people to achieve their maximum level of continence. This could be daytime or nighttime wetting, constipation or support with toilet skills development.

Cleft lip and palate

Information, assessment, therapeutic and surgical treatments for children and young people with cleft lip and palate.

Vision and eye health

Vision screening for all children in reception year (aged 4-5 years) in school and treatment of problems related to reduced vision.

Oxford Paediatric and Adolescent Rheumatology Centre

Helps children and young people with inflammatory diseases, chronic pain and other bone and muscle conditions.

Hearing, children’s audiology

Supports children identified with hearing problems.

Children’s Hospital (OUH)

A range of speciality services for children and young people throughout the Thames Valley.

Mental health

Children and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) (OxHFT)

Helps children and young people who are finding it hard to cope with everyday life because of difficult feelings, behaviour or relationships.
