Learning at Oxfordshire Museums
Activities which enable children and adults to handle real and replica artefacts.
Oxfordshire's heritage and museums services have a range creative activities which enable children and adults to handle real and replica artefacts.
Services for schools
Schools can book a workshop at The Oxfordshire Museum or we can come to you.
All workshops feature a range of practical, hands-on activities using a wide variety of artefacts and photographs. Your workshop leader will run the session and provide all necessary materials. A detailed teacher’s pack is available for all sessions.
More details can be found on the workshop for schools page.
Box loans
Loan boxes contain a selection of genuine artefacts, photographs and documents with the occasional replica item. The objects are an ideal starting point for launching creative learning.
The boxes can be used to promote and develop observation skills, critical thinking, problem solving, questioning and empathising skills. They are also ideal for stimulating creative writing, art and design. All loans boxes come with a teacher’s pack which includes background information and ways to use the box in the classroom.
Services for adults
Reminiscence sessions in the community
Hands on Oxfordshire's Heritage (HOOH) runs reminiscence sessions with groups of older people. Museum artefacts, documents, photographs and a range of well loved objects can help to stimulate conversation and allow shared memories, often prompting much laughter.
A trained facilitator brings the boxes to your group and helps get the conversation flowing and before long the hour-long session has flown by. Friendships are forged and memories stimulated in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.
With more than 40 themed boxes of objects and photographs on topics such as 'Fun and Games', 'Make Do and Mend', 'Food' and 'Sunday Best', groups are sure to find something to interest them.
The cost of these sessions is £24.50. Suggested group size: maximum of 15.
'Those Were the Days' group
Do you have memories of Woodstock and the surrounding villages, or other memories you would like to share? We have a monthly group for people to meet up, reminisce about the old days and share memories. More can be found on our Those Were the Days webpage.
Oxfordshire Libraries
Oxfordshire Libraries are developing a range of resources that have been designed to be used primarily to support reminiscence among the elderly and those suffering from memory loss.
Donations
Most of the items held by Oxfordshire Museum Service come from the people of Oxfordshire, who donate them to us.
