Better Broadband for Oxfordshire is a £25m project to bring fibre broadband to over 90 per cent of homes and businesses in the county by the end of 2015.

It’s a collaboration between Oxfordshire County Council, the Government (through BDUK) and BT that will boost the local economy by creating and protecting jobs. The project is bringing significant social and economic benefits to rural areas where broadband access has previously been slow. By stepping in to fill gaps not served commercially, both businesses and homes across the county will benefit significantly.

Nearly everyone will benefit

Making sure that everyone has access to some form of broadband connection will boost business efficiency, streamline and reduce costs for providing the council’s numerous customer services and enrich leisure and social time. Almost everybody will benefit from this major investment. The project is being jointly funded through £10million from Oxfordshire County Council, £11million from BT, and £4million from BDUK.

What’s the latest?

After a competitive process BT was selected as the commercial partner in the project in August 2013, and work has now begun on updating the current infrastructure across the county. This means that homes and businesses will soon be able to place orders for faster broadband. As with all programmes of this size, it’s not possible to plan every area at the same time, so some areas will be enabled before others, but by the end of 2015 over 90 per cent of Oxfordshire will be able to access broadband at a minimum of 24Mb/s.
