Money and financial advice for parents

Financial help if you are disabled or have special educational needs or a disabled child.

Personal budgets for children and young people

A personal budget is an amount of money identified by the local authority or health services to pay for some aspects of the care or provision set out in an Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plan.

Personal budgets are intended to give parents and young people more choice and control about how the outcomes in the EHC plan are achieved. Read about our Personal Budget Policy (pdf format, 81Kb).

Benefits and allowances

Benefits and allowances may be paid to the parents of a disabled child or directly to a young adult who is disabled.

Disability Living Allowance can help with the additional costs of looking after a disabled child under the age of 16.

Personal Independence Payments can be made to people with a long term health condition or disability aged 16-64.

Employment and Support Allowance can be offered to young people aged 16 plus whose illness or disability impacts on their ability to work. It may include financial support or personalised help.

Carer’s allowance is a payment made if you look after someone who has substantial caring needs.

You may also be able to get extra Child Tax Credit.

There’s a useful overview of the financial help that’s available for disabled people on the GOV.UK website.

Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA)

Disabled Students’ Allowance gives extra help to undergraduate or postgraduate students with a disability or long term health condition.  It includes specific learning difficulties like dyslexia and mental health conditions.

Discover DSA is a website set up to explain more about DSA. It has accessible videos.
