Ofsted childcare registration

Information about registering childcare with Ofsted.

The law defines childcare as any form of care for a child, including education or any other supervised activity. There are some exclusions from this definition, such as care provided by relatives, and education provided by a school for children from the September following their fifth birthday.

Ofsted registers childcare on two registers: the Early Years Register and the Childcare Register. You can read more about the registers on the Ofsted website. People can apply to join one register or both registers at the same time.

Ofsted's Guide to registration on the Early Years Register includes information for all applicants who wish to register as a childminder or a childcare provider on domestic or non-domestic premises. It provides an overview of how to make an application; the registration process; inspection and other visits Ofsted may undertake.

The Ofsted factsheet, Registration not required explains the types of care that are not required to register with Ofsted. If you think you are exempt from registration because you operate for 14 days or less in a 12-month period, use this form to notify Ofsted. Please read 'Registration not required' first.
