Minor repair work on Frideswide Square tomorrow

Published 20 May 2016

Work to repair a very small area of damaged paving on Frideswide Square, Oxford, will take place this Saturday.

On Saturday 21 May 2016 temporary four-way traffic lights will be set up from 7.45am.  Work will start at 8am and is scheduled to be complete by 2pm.

Outside the Royal Oxford Hotel, contractors will remove the damaged stones and replace them with tarmac for the time being as a safety measure.

There are‎ 3,735 square metres of paving slab in the square. The work tomorrow will affect a maximum of four square metres -  representing 0.1 per cent of the square’s overall area.

Some disruption is expected but the traffic lights will be manually controlled so that the contractors on site can keep traffic flowing as freely as possible and maintain a safe working area.

County Councillor David Nimmo Smith, Cabinet member for transport, said: “We have seen a number of vehicles coming from Hythe Bridge Street who turn left at the roundabout over running the pavement resulting in damage.

“The work that we are doing on Saturday is a temporary safety measure while we finalise the options for a longer term solution, which we expect to implement later in the summer.

“The affected part of the square is absolutely tiny when viewed as part of the total surface area of Frideswide. The scheme as a whole has been a success since December.”
