Special Schools test their consumer and safety knowledge

Published 07 March 2016

Ten of the county’s special needs schools will be taking part in the 2016 Oxfordshire consumer challenge quiz on Thursday March 17

The annual competition, run by Oxfordshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service   is for children with learning difficulties, is a chance for them to demonstrate their consumer skills and knowledge on safety in a hands on team effort way.

Each school will put forward a team of four pupils. We are glad to add a new school to our competition and wish them every success.

The Endeavour Academy from Headington will join  Bishopswood School in Sonning Common, Fitzwaryn School in Wantage, The Iffley Academy in Oxford, Kingfisher School in Abingdon, Mabel Prichard School in Oxford, Woodeaton Manor School (the defending champions), John Watson School in Wheatley and Springfield School in Witney.

Shelley Edwards Schools Liaison Officer for the Trading Standards Service said:
“The competition teaches life skills and consumer knowledge in a fun and friendly way.  The quiz is mainly visual and hands-on, rather than a standard question and answer format.  Everyone, including the audience, can take part.

“There will be an Olympic style prize giving at the end of the competition for all team members.”

Richard Webb, Oxfordshire County Council’s Trading Standards and Community Safety Manager  said, “This promises to be a great event.  From past experience we know that not only do the teams enjoy themselves but the audience and our own staff learn quite a bit and come away with a real sense of achievement.

“This event has been running for several years and is a great way to boost young people’s confidence and teach them about their consumer rights.”
