General information

Parents of children born between 1 September 2009 and 31 August 2010 (inclusive) who attend an infant school, need to apply for their children’s transfer to a junior or primary school.

In addition, parents of children born between 1 September 2009 and 31 August 2010 (inclusive) who attend Year 2 at a primary school but want to apply for a transfer to a junior school (only) that does not have a current Year 2 class, need to apply for their children’s transfer.

    Information for parents

Our Stepping up booklet (pdf format, 1.5Mb) includes information for parents and carers of children due to transfer to Year 3 in a junior or primary school in September 2017.

Important things to remember when applying

    • It is the responsibility of parents/carers to apply for a school place by the deadline of 15 January 2017
    • You can list three different schools in order of preference. We strongly advise you to use all three preferences
    • We advise you to enter your catchment (or designated) school as one of your preferences
    • Attending your catchment school does not entitle you to free home to school transport if it is not your closest school and / or under 3 miles away (for a child who will be over 8 years old during Year 3)
    • If your application is late, you are far less likely to get a place at one of your preferred schools.

Will my child get a place?

Catchment area is one of the ways that places at schools are decided. There are other factors (e.g. whether a child has a brother or sister at the school). For transfer from infant to junior or primary schools the traditional linked junior/primary school gives priority at Year 3 to children attending the linked infant school. These links are:

Will I get help with transport to school?

Read our school travel page to find out whether your child is eligible for free or concessionary transport.

What if I don’t get the place I want?

You can do one or more of the following:

    • Add your child's name to the Continued Interest (or waiting) list. More information (pdf format, 235Kb) Please beware that if you add your child’s name to a school’s continued interest list, and a place becomes available that can be allocated your child, the place will be given to your child and their place at the school originally offered will be taken away.
    • Change preferences - add new preference(s) or change preference order. More information (pdf format, 130Kb)
    • Appeal for a place (see below)

    Appeal

You have the right to appeal for a place at any school where a place could not be offered. The information sent out to you in the post will explain more about who is responsible for organising your appeal.

    How places were allocated

Information on how places were allocated in a particular school is available on the individual school pages.

    Moving/transferring schools
