Renewal of vows

An opportunity for couples to renew their commitment.

Hands

A renewal of vows ceremony is a non-religious ceremony. It is a very special occasion where family and friends can be involved.

It can be held to mark a special anniversary, such as the 10th, 25th, 40th or diamond wedding. It can also be held to re-affirm the vows made at a wedding or civil partnership, which may have taken place in another country when family and friends could not be present.

Who may arrange it?

Any couple of any age can arrange a renewal of vows ceremony. Couples do not have to live in Oxfordshire to arrange a ceremony in the county.

You will have the chance to work closely with a professional celebrant to select from the options available, and tailor a ceremony that is special for you and your family. Every ceremony is different, so you can create something unique for you to remember and treasure.

What happens in the ceremony?

Each ceremony is divided into sections and can reflect events in your life together. They give you the chance to create something personal and special:

  • Introduction and welcome
  • Readings or music can be included at various points.
  • Mention of children of the marriage
  • Renewal of vows/pledges
  • Exchange of new or additional rings or re-dedication of original ring(s)
  • Signing of register and certificate
  • Speech by original wedding guest
  • Presentation of certificate
  • Closing words.

You do not need to include every section in your ceremony, and each part of the ceremony can be as simple or as complex as you wish.

How long does a ceremony last?

That depends on the type of ceremony, and the different options you choose. In Oxfordshire, we suggest you allow 30 minutes for your ceremony.

Where can the ceremony be held?

We offer renewal of vows ceremonies in all the registration offices and approved premises within the county. They may be celebrated on any day of the week except Christmas Day. Ceremonies on Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Boxing Day or New Year's Day will be subject to staffing availability.

If you would like to use a different venue, for example a village hall, or a marquee in the grounds of a hotel, this would need to be discussed beforehand and visited by a member of the Registration Service to ensure it is a suitable venue for the ceremony.

How much will the ceremony cost?

The fee will vary depending on the day, time and venue that you choose. You will need to contact the specific venue of your choice regarding their availability and their own venue room hire charges.

For more information, please contact the Registration Service.

Please note that Renewal of Vows ceremonies are non-statutory and therefore the ceremony itself and the issue of any certificates carry no legal status.
