Parish path wardens

Find out about Parish path wardens and what they do

Access Field Officer Jon Beale leads an introduction session

The Countryside Access Team supports the Parish Path Wardens (PPWs) in Oxfordshire – a group of volunteers established by the Ramblers and the Oxford Fieldpaths Society that regularly monitor the paths in one or more parishes, reporting on new and resolved issues and undertaking very light maintenance work.

Over 80% of Oxfordshire is covered by this group as well as surveyors from the Chilterns Society and the Cotswolds Wardens.

What do the PPWs do?

All PPWs walk all the paths in their chosen parish(s) at least once a year – taking note and photographing issues on the network.  PPWs are also encouraged to carry out light trimming of any vegetation that is in their way, clean signposts and waymarkers, replace faded or broken waymark discs and scrape off any vegetation on bridge footboards.

Where an issue is urgent, like a fallen tree blocking the path, or hazardous, like a big hole in a bridge, then these are reported immediately by email to the Countryside Access Team (CAT). Any less-serious problems are reported using the on-line web reporting facility.

To see the paths in their parish every PPW is provided with a large scale, 1:10,000 map of their area, which shows the details of all the Public Rights of Way, including their reference numbers.

From time to time there are training sessions run by the Oxfordshire Ramblers and by the CAT, and there are occasional social sessions too.
