Oxford Music Library | Oxfordshire County Council

Oxford Music Library

We hold the largest collection of music books, printed and recorded music in the county.

The music library will close on Friday 17 November, as we prepare to move back to the Westgate facilities.

It means we will be unable to deal with music set requests during that time, and because of the Christmas holidays please choose a pick-up date either before 20 November 2017 or after 8 January 2018.

We will of course not charge you for the extra weeks you might incur as a result of the closure. You can return sets during that time, but as we might not be able to immediately deal with the sets, you might still get an overdue notice. You can ignore these overdue notices.

The Oxford Music Library holds large collections of printed music, CDs, music books and music DVDs. While the Central Library is at the temporary location in the Castle Quarter, a significant part of the Music Library stock has been re-located to the Library Support Services. These music books, scores and CDs are still available to borrow through requests.

We can help you with any music enquiry. Please contact us on 01865 815388 or email oxfordmusic.library@oxfordshire.gov.uk

Find the library

The Music Library is no longer accessible due to the renovation of the Westgate shopping centre in central Oxford.

You can borrow all music books and printed music free of charge, including a wide range of biographies, music criticism and music theory textbooks; study scores and performance scores ranging from classical music to popular music of the 20th and 21st century.

A wide selection of music CDs and DVDs, from classical, folk, jazz, world music and rock to opera performances and documentaries are available to hire for a small hire charge.

Performance sets

During the Westgate Development we regret that the temporary Central Library in the Castle Quarter cannot be used to pick up or drop of Music Performance Sets. Please use any of our Oxfordshire branch libraries as a collection point for Music Performance Sets.

The Oxford Music Library has an extensive collection of Performance Sets, both orchestral parts and multiple vocal sets. Anything we don't have in stock we will try to source from other Music Services around the country.

Encore, the online Union-catalogue of sets of performance music in UK libraries, will show you all the performance sets that are available for hire.

The Music Performance Sets Service is available for all music societies based in Oxfordshire. We also provide access to Oxfordshire’s Music Performance Set stock to societies outside of Oxfordshire on the understanding that the set is picked up from and returned to an Oxfordshire Library.

Before submitting requests for Performance Sets societies should be registered with the Oxfordshire Music Performance Set Service by completing a membership form together with proof of name and address (e.g. copy of driving license, utility bill or bank statement). These can be posted to “Library Support Services, Music Department, Holton, Oxford, OX33 1QQ” or scanned and sent by e-mail to oxfordmusic.library@oxfordshire.gov.uk

Complete an online form or, if you prefer, download either an orchestral set booking form (pdf format, 100Kb) or a vocal set booking form (pdf format, 100 Kb) and send either via email to oxfordmusic.library@oxfordshire.gov.uk or by post to "Library Support Services, Music Department, Holton, Oxford, OX33 1QQ".

Please consult the performance set service guidelines (pdf format, 225 Kb) for further details and information on charges.

Whether you are in an amateur group, a play-reading group, a church or youth club, we have a large collection of playsets for you to borrow.
Plays range from old favourites like Shakespeare and Shaw to works by modern writers like Alan Ayckbourn and Noel Coward. We also stock a selection of pantomimes, Children’s plays and Christmas plays.

Borrowing a playset:

Playsets may be borrowed on drama group tickets only. Each set has up to 13 copies, enough copies for each member of the cast. A maximum of 5 sets per group may be borrowed and can be issued for up to 12 weeks for a charge of £5. Single copies of a play are available separately in the literature section of the library and may be borrowed by any registered adult or young adult reader. These single copies are issued for three weeks.

Playset collection

A list of plays held in our collection is available here arranged by the number of copies in the set or on the library catalogue.
If you need help with your choice, or help with requesting a title or need any further information, please contact us at 01865-815388 or email oxfordmusic.library@oxfordshire.gov.uk.

N.B.: To search the catalogue type “PLAY SET” in the keyword section.

Lost or damaged items

Any lost or damaged copies of a playset will incur a replacement cost.

With certain exemptions, the author of a play owns the copyright to it. Under the Copyright Law no public performance or reading of a protected play may be given, either in its entirety or in the form of excerpts, without the prior consent of the owner of the copyright. Possession of copies of a play does not carry with it the right to perform. Borrowers must apply direct to the holder of such rights, usually the publisher, for consent. Borrowers should bear in mind the restrictions imposed by current copyright legislation.
