Improvements to Frideswide Square

Improvements to this set of junctions are progressing well but disruptions and delays are expected.

work at Frideswide Square

What has been done so far

  • A new reinforced concrete base and York stone slabs have been laid by contractors on the footway
  • New granite dropped kerbs have been laid for cyclists between Botley Road and the square.
  • The contractors have also installed the first stage of a new outlining of dark granite stone by the tactile paving at all western crossing points to assist visually impaired users in the square.

Traffic management alert

On Thursday 22 and Friday 23 February essential maintenance will take place on the Botley Road traffic island while work continues in Frideswide Square. This work includes the installation of new kerbs and road markings.

During the work there will be temporary traffic signals in place. All eastbound traffic will be diverted to Becket Street and Osney Lane which will remain one-way streets. The eastbound bus stop in Frideswide Square will also be suspended and be relocated on Park End Street.

Phase three: 25 February - 23 March

Traffic management will next be required at the start of the third phase of work outside Royal Oxford Hotel from Sunday 25 February. Essential maintenance and improvement work will then take place here for a couple of weeks.

  • Temporary traffic signals will be in place at the junction of Hythe Bridge St/Worcester St/George St to support clockwise traffic flows.
  • Hythe Bridge St and Park End St will temporarily become one-way roads.
  • The eastbound bus stop on Park End Street will also be relocated onto Hythe Bridge Street.

Access to businesses and properties for deliveries will be maintained at all times. Pedestrian and cycling routes through the square are also maintained.

Phase 4: 11-23 March

The final phase of work has been scheduled to coincide with resurfacing work Oxford City Council have planned on Hollybush Row meaning that overall disruption will be kept to a minimum.

Disruptions and delays

Disruption and delays are to be expected subject to weather conditions.
