Forthcoming events and training

Carers meetings, training calendar and other events

In order that Shared Lives carers keep their knowledge and skills up to date they are expected to attend at least one 'Carer and Service user meeting' a year, or a refresher training session.

Formal training courses that need to be attended once every three years are:

  • first aid at work
  • medication awareness
  • adult safeguarding.

These courses can be booked through the Shared Lives office on 01865 897971.

Carers are invited to either join sessions being run three times a year for new carer applicants by the scheme, or you can attend a comparable course with the agreement of your Shared Lives link social worker. First aid courses are also provided by St John's and can be booked if necessary, throughout the year via the scheme at a venue or day to suit carers who are unable to join the Shared Lives group sessions.

Carers who have already attended a face-to face training session on adult safeguarding may complete their refresher online via www.logontocarelearningcentre.org.uk . Please ask your SL social worker for the course guidance.  Please send a copy of your course certificate to your SL social worker so that your training records can be updated.

There are also a number of interesting online courses that are available to Shared Lives carers on the www.logontocarelearningcentre.org.uk   website which will also provide you with a certificate for your continuing professional development. Carers working towards the Care Certificate can discuss which courses they might want to do with their SL social worker.

New Shared Lives course for 2017

There will be a new course for carers to attend this year on 'Delivering Personal Care in Shared Lives'. Carers who already provide personal care are invited to attend if they have not had training elsewhere. Other carers who would like to provide personal care, or who want to know more about it are also encouraged to come.

Dates are still to be decided on, depending on demand. Please get in touch to let us know if you are interested. We would like to know which months and days would suit Carers best as we want to include as many people as possible on the course.

Carer and service user meetings

Carer and service user meetings are held three times a year. They are an opportunity for carers to meet each other and the scheme social workers, for a chat and refreshments.

We have a different 'theme' for each meeting, either a talk by an outside speaker or a workshop led by scheme social workers.

Topics included fire safety, mental health awareness, tax advice and health promotion. We are always very pleased to hear from carers about anything they would like to cover.

The meetings are very informal and people who use the service are welcome to attend and join in the main meeting or join their own group for a different activity.

Meetings are usually held on Thursdays, 4.30 till 6.30 pm. We try and move the venues around Oxfordshire each year to allow as many people to be able to attend as possible.

Next confirmed dates for 2017 are:

  • September 7, 4.30 at Redlands Day Centre, Neithrop Avenue, in Banbury: The topic will be on ‘mate crime and date crime and online safety’ with a guest from Thames Valley Police.
  • November 7, 4.30 pm at Abbey House, in Abingdon: The topic will be on health issues with a guest from the learning disability nursing team.

Full details regarding the meetings will be sent out in the carers newsletters nearer the times and will be posted on this page along with full details of the themes, venues and maps.
