37.5 reasons to work for us

Why work for Oxfordshire County Council? See our 37.5 reasons for working in social care.

1. First class training

We don’t do one-size fits all training here – it’s all about you. Our innovative Oxfordshire Social Work Academy offers outstanding practice and professional development to all of our social workers. Be part of it.

2. Attractive offices

Our social work bases in Abingdon, Banbury, Bicester, Witney, Didcot and Oxford are modern and attractive with good meeting spaces.

3. Flexible working to suit your life

We can’t guarantee it every day, but our agile working policy means you can work across council sites or from home to help reduce the time spent travelling.

4. Family and work-life balance

You shouldn’t have to frantically juggle work and life. We know both are important and we want your balancing act to be effortless. Flexible working options help our staff achieve a healthy work life balance.

5. Our ASYE

We want our newly qualified social workers to stay and grow their careers with us. That’s why we have developed a pioneering ASYE programme, delivered through our innovative Academy, to demonstrate right from the get-go how much we value them.

6. Competitive pay

We know that social workers do an invaluable job. We offer competitive pay to help demonstrate how much we value the work they do.

7. Generous holiday allowance

We want you at your best, so we give our team a generous holiday allowance of at least 29 days each year.

8. Well at work

Our senior team is committed to our Well at Work programme, which supports the health and wellbeing of all employees.

9. Supportive managers

Our managers have been with us for many years and with their wealth of experience are committed to supporting you in your practice.

10. Our teams

“Innovative”, “passionate”, “professional” and “fun”. That’s how our teams describe themselves. Feel free to ask them yourself.

11. Tailored induction

We don’t do a one-size-fits-all approach here. Your induction and training is matched to your skills and experiences.

12. Your career – take it where you want

Learn and develop your skills and experience, so you can follow your chosen path. You could be part of our aspiring seniors programme or move into quality assurance of practice as an IRO Conference Chair. Either way, we will support you.

21. Manageable caseloads

We work hard to ensure caseloads are manageable and there is a balance of cases.

22. Oxfordshire - it’s a great place to live

…we seriously recommend it…

Rich in history and culture, with great transport connections. Oxfordshire is a beautiful county at England’s heart.

23. Relocation expenses of £8,000 to help you move

We know moving is a bit pricey, so we offer a little financial assistance towards property deposits and to ‘grease the wheels’ of the removal van.

24. Continuity

When staff join our team they want to stay. We have above average staff retention rates, which gives continuity of service and makes for strong, settled teams. We also think it is one of best endorsements we can get as an employer.

25. Attractive staff discount scheme

Shopping, holidays, insurance, eating out, health and leisure activities. Our staff discount scheme makes life in Oxfordshire that bit sweeter.

26. Visible managers

A quote from - Jenny Simons, Family Support Team

Get involved in one of our many non-work activities where you can relax and enjoy the company of colleagues.

28. Pride and inspiration

A quote from - Claire Law, Social Worker

“I am inspired by my colleagues' commitment to the people we work with and to each other. I am proud of those who always do more than is required to ensure that people are safe and that they have had a good opportunity to express their wishes and views on their care.”

29. Diversity of work

A quote from - Melanie Pearce, Principal Social Worker Adult Social Care

Occasionally, things go wrong. When that happens, our commitment is to learn, develop and improve – not point the finger. We protect our social workers and support them through regular reflective supervision, development opportunities and robust support mechanisms.

33. Coaching

Free access to qualified coaches to support the personal growth and development of our staff.

34. Excellent pension scheme

20 per cent in the pot. We’ll contribute up to an additional 20 percentage of your salary to your pension. So, with 15 years’ service, you can expect a pension of around £10,000 per year on retirement.

35. Respect

Social care is high on the council’s agenda, and our workers are respected throughout Oxfordshire.
