It is estimated that approximately 20 per cent of pupils will have some kind of special educational needs (SEN) at some time during their school life. In Oxfordshire we aim to meet children's SEN flexibly so that the right help is available at the right time.
Information for parents and carers
Your child and you (.pdf format, 1.6Mb) is a guide for children and young people with SEN and disabilities. It provides answers to most questions that parents have.
Parent Partnership Oxfordshire offers impartial information, support, advice and training to parents to enable them to make informed decisions about their child's special educational needs.
Support for pre-school children is provided by Early Years SEN Inclusion Teachers (EYSENITs), who are teachers experienced in working with children with special educational needs. They offer help, advice and training to families, early years settings, children’s centres and childminders.
Every school has the support of an educational psychologist, offering assessment and advice on how children develop and learn. This is organised by the Educational Psychology Service.
The local education authority has a duty to provide free transport to a child's nearest suitable school, provided the school is beyond walking distance from the child's home. For a child with special educational needs however, the nearest suitable school may well be different than for other pupils, and walking may not be an option.
