The Childcare Act 2006 requires every local authority in England to conduct a childcare sufficiency assessment.
During the Autumn of 2008 we updated the countywide assessment of the supply of and demand for childcare to identify the gaps. A summary of childcare gaps report (.pdf format, 933Kb) has been produced which gives an overview of the key headlines from the childcare sufficiency assessment 2007-08, the progress made to date and the childcare gaps identified in this year's assessment update and future plans. The assessment and findings can be read in more detail below.
Aim of assessment
The aim of this assessment is to provide us information needed to identify gaps in the market and plan the steps to secure sufficient childcare. In this context, ‘sufficient’ means having the right type and volume of childcare to meet the needs of all parents/carers in the local community, but with a particular focus on meeting the needs of families with disabled children and those who are in work or who are seeking work.
Comments and suggestions
We welcome any comments or suggestions on future childcare assessments and actions to address the childcare gaps. Please contact Fergus Campbell, Childcare Development Manager, if you have any comments or you would like any of the reports available in another language.
If you would like to find out more about the childcare available in your area please contact Oxfordshire’s Family Information Service on 08452 26 26 36 or visit their website.
Detailed reports
Detailed reports have been produced as part of the childcare sufficiency assessment 2008-09 update which have refreshed the information about the supply of registered childcare and the current childcare gaps across the county, in light of this information. A report has also been written to capture information from the additional consultation with parents, children and young people over the course of the year.
